An eBay payout is not your sales figure. It is a net transfer after selling fees, promoted-listing charges, refunds, disputes, holds, currency conversion and VAT that eBay may have collected on specific transactions. Forti reconciles the seller reports to the bank, separates marketplace-collected VAT, reviews DAC7 and connects the monthly records to VAT returns (where VAT-registered), annual accounts and the CRO Annual Return (where applicable).
Seller Hub shows the information behind the payout. The bank shows only the net cash movement. Treating the deposit as your sales figure produces an incomplete set of accounts.
The deemed-supplier rule applies transaction by transaction. eBay does not take over every seller's VAT obligations.
A new customs duty applies to qualifying low-value packages sent directly to Irish consumers from outside the EU.
DAC7 requires platform operators to collect and report information about many sellers. eBay's report can place your seller identity, consideration, fees and activity directly within the tax-authority information exchange.
Selling personal belongings is usually different from running a resale business. The distinction depends on what you do — not the label on the eBay account.
The correct VAT route depends on where the seller is established, where stock is held, the nature of the buyer and the transaction type. More than one route can apply at the same time.
| VAT route | Main trigger | What it covers and what it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Irish VAT | Taxable turnover from goods exceeds €85,000, or the seller registers voluntarily | Covers the seller's Irish VAT obligations. Marketplace-collected transactions must be mapped separately. |
| Union OSS | Qualifying intra-EU B2C distance sales exceed the combined €10,000 threshold | Reports destination VAT on qualifying sales through Ireland. Does not replace local registrations created by stock held abroad. |
| Local EU registration | The seller stores, transfers or makes domestic supplies of stock in another Member State | Local VAT numbers and returns can be needed alongside or instead of OSS. |
| Marketplace deemed supplier | One of the specific electronic-interface scenarios applies | eBay handles VAT on that transaction. The underlying seller still needs correct bookkeeping and may have other VAT obligations. |
| IOSS or import route | Goods are imported from outside the EU in consignments up to €150 | VAT and customs treatment depend on the transaction, platform set-up and import flow. |
Many eBay businesses resell used goods, collectibles or antiques. The normal VAT rules and the second-hand margin scheme can produce very different results.
Stock purchased for resale is not always an immediate expense. Unsold stock remains an asset at year-end and is generally valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value under the applicable accounting framework (FRS 102, FRS 105 or IFRS). The cost of goods sold is matched to the items actually sold — not to everything purchased in the period.
Seller obligations can extend beyond tax where goods are placed on the Irish market. Environmental and producer duties apply separately from the accounting and VAT work.
eBay, Amazon, Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe and PayPal each need their own reconciliation before the totals are consolidated.
Six stages — from the initial seller and tax review through to ongoing account growth as new channels are added.
Third-party software subscriptions, overseas VAT registrations, customs advice, environmental registrations, historical clean-up and high-volume item-level stock work are quoted separately where they fall outside the selected plan.
Forti uses its current e-commerce packages for eBay sellers. The final plan depends on accounting transaction volume, eBay sites, currencies, stock records, VAT schemes and the number of other sales channels. All fees exclude VAT.

Guides, glossaries and answers to the compliance questions that come up most often when running an eBay business in Ireland.
The cleanest eBay accounts start with the transaction report — not the bank deposit. Forti builds the reconciliation, stock and VAT process that keeps the figures connected every month.
